Allotment rules 1847

Garden in autumnWe do not have the allotment rules for Prudhoe dating back so far unfortunately – no-one seems to have found the old records for us locally.

But these make interesting reading for present day allotment holders. To be convicted of poaching or dishonesty loses you your allotment as does being a drunkard, working on your allotment on Sunday or when you should be at work as well as not attending church on Sunday. Oh and you are told what crops you can grow.

Very similar are allotment rules from Titchhmarsh (1820) – with the addition that if you are off work on the sick you can’t work on your allotment.

We do not know when we are well off when it comes to rules in Prudhoe!
